The transaxle. The simple combination of transmission, differential and axle into one assembly. As an Alfa 75 owner, I love it. And so do a lot of manufacturers. After a drought of nearly a decade, the new millennium has welcomed the transaxle back wholeheartedly. We’re not talking about the common transaxle fitted to every front-engined, front-wheel-drive hatchbox, but rather about the big units fitted to the backend of many different performance cars from Ferarris to Chevrolets...

“Front wheel drive = fail”. I saw that motif on somebody’s T-shirt in the Nürburgring car park and it got me thinking, what makes a Performance Car? Does it need to be driven by the rear wheels to be considered a sports car? I think, over the years, given that question to answer, I would have answered both ‘yes’ and ‘no’ at different times...
