A really strange weekend here at the Nürburgring. The weather has been flawless and the traffic light. Friday was a nightmare, with the queues from the car park extending as far as the BMW test centre at times. But every other day has been nearly deserted...
Visitors to the Nürburgring should be especially careful about speeding on the public roads. Every day this week there have been up to 40 speed control points dotted around the region. Somebody not too far from where I sit was fined €990 last night after braking too late from a 100kph limit to a 50kph.
Some Polizei officers on patrol, yesterday.
Visitors should be especially diligent around small junctions with low speed limits over short distances; e.g. the Meuspath exit on Doettinger Hohe and the Wirft junction on the B258.
There has been an extra day of driving added to the calendar for this Easter. On Tuesday April 14th the Nordschleife is now open to the public from 11.15am instead of the previous 17.15 in the evening.
Visiting the Nordschleife is all well and good. But not many people know just how close Europe's other fantastic 'classic' circuit is. Answer: About an hour by car (or 45 minutes by Yellowbird...).

Life is all about moments. Not hours, or days. Just moments. And they really couldn’t get any better than this. Let me explain; I’m doing the day job, keeping my students on the straight and narrow here at the Nürburgring Nordschleife (OK, just the narrow). We’re driving the new Nissan GTR on a rather exclusive Goodwood Road Racing Club trackday. We started this damp day with a couple of sighting laps, me driving, students listening. It’s exceedingly unwise to drive the sighting laps at any more than a walking pace. The Nordschleife is difficult enough to learn, without your instructor transforming it in a green blur punctuated by nausea and toilet urges... Continues after the click...
This week's industry test session has been largely deserted, despite the fantastic weather. But one fast car that's been lapping is the new Ford Focus. Rumours abound that Ford are hoping to announce a new front-wheel-drive lap record by this April... (more after the click)
