Video: How to enjoy the Nürburgring in the wet

Details

It may come as no surprise at all that I just love driving the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the wet. I appreciate that lapping the 'Ring in pouring rain is not a popular choice, but here I'm going to try and show you why it's so good, and why it doesn't have to be as dangerous as many drivers make it.

When I arrived at the car park today I was blown away to see a car park packing some seriously awesome metal. As well as a few hardcore regulars, there was a bunch of guys from Ramstein AFB who'd arrived in all kinds of vehicles. From an F150 diesel truck to a RHD Accord Type-R, these guys seemed to have one of everything. Golf R32? Subaru Impreza WRX? JDM Nissan 200SX? Check, check and check.

And you know what? None of them crashed. Yes, I know, that's probably some sort of record for a group of servicemen in one place, and I admit, I saw a video where the F150, of all things, actually span. I didn't think the Nordschleife was narrow enough for that thing to fit down it sideways, but it did.

Anyway, back to the point... the reason why nobody crashed today was partly luck, but mostly because the conditions were intimidating. This in turn meant that there was no shame in taking a steady lap and enjoying the Nürburgring at your own speed.

In the video on the left you'll see a whole bunch of different cars finding the slipperiest part of Metzgesfeld 2! I can't quite believe that guys who shot this video stood in freezing rain for around 2 hours to shoot this.

Crazy folks!

It was bloody difficult, and after enjoying some seriously fun and skiddy laps with old friends (and new), I was inspired enough to take the last lap alone and try to explain to the camera, and thusly to the BTG massive, what I think is important when choosing to make a wet lap of the 'Ring. Enjoy the following video and if you have some advice about driving the 'Ring in the wet, why not post it in the comments section below?
