iRacing and the newest laser-scan of the Nürburgring Nordschleife

This odd-looking Skoda is actally the key ingredient in creating an ultra-realistic Nürburgring Nordschleife for your next computer game. It was spotted entering the Nordschleife only this morning.

And on the same day American simulator specialists iRacing have announced title-sponsorship of September's Blancpain Endurance race at the Nürburgring - the Nürburgring 1000km.

Sources inside the Nürburgring and also inside the games industry inform me that this 3D laser scanning might have been commissioned by Nürburgring themselves, with the aim of licensing an accurate "point cloud' of the track to any simulator or games developer interested.

The point cloud, simply a three-dimensional 'map' of the circuit, is the skeleton on to which a beautiful digital painting of the track can be laid. It might make sense financially to offer this map as an official product in return for royalties.

iRacing.com have just announced that they will be the official headline sponsor of the Nürburgring 1000km race. This round of the Blancpain Endurance series is held on the Nürburgring F1 circuit from September 19th to the 21st.

As more and more of us enjoy computer and console games, it's reassuring to the see the marketing budgets of big titles aiming at our own petrol-head demographic.

And it gets even better...

simracing expo

As part of this real-world/virtual-world collaboration, a new event titled SimRacing Expo 2014 is now scheduled for the 'Ring Boulevard on the same weekend. The details are sketchy, but I think we can expect some pretty cool gaming rigs available to test. And some interesting cross-overs possible, in both directions! Reallife racers and sim-racers trading seats for a few laps...

Check out the official site here.

While the laser scan of the 20.8km Nordschleife might now be complete, I doubt that any firm could create a great track map before September. This could all just be co-incidence.

But what this does confirm is the growing importance of computer games to circuit owners and racing organisations. Whatever happens, you can be sure I'll be checking out this event to let my own inner-geek out of the bag for a day...

...and, of course, more people will spectacularly crash after having "learned" the track on the simulator. True story! :D

People crash because of a grey area between perceived ability and actual ability!!! Regardless of simulators/ games machines!!

Well, one of the best tips I read before going there first time was "Drive at 80% of what you think you are able to do".

Worked for me - I felt I could have been faster but: Had fun, drove a sub-10 mins lap on my first lap ever and, more important, came home with both me and car in one piece.

Do you enjoy BTG?

BTG is NOT a massive operation; it's just me, my camera and my computer. And a lot of help from my friends and family. Thanks!
