People often ask me; "Is the Nürburgring normally this busy?". Well, no, it isn't. And I'm only writing this on Easter Sunday evening. There's still the whole of Easter Monday to go yet! (EDIT: Monday is a wash out. Nobody here!)
Kar Freitag is undoubtedly the biggest day of 'terroristenfahrt' out of the whole year. For this day viewing points around the Nordschleife were packed to bursting point. The queues stretched for kilometers in every direction. It made the 24hr appear poorly attended. Luckily for us, there are plenty of videos to illustrate the lunacy...

*UPDATED:Check out the humongous crowd above. I remember somebody famous once uttering that a crowd's IQ drops by the square root of the total number of participants. Obviously this effect now spreads to the track as we can watch how the carnage unfolds in a video below. What looks very much like a GT3.RS 4.0 runs wide on a water spill and smashes the barrier. Then, in his infinite wisdom, he decides to drive off (instead of stopping and flagging his own accident). And leaving the contents of both radiators on the floor and possibly his sump too. We can only hope his engine explodes around the corner in some kind of Darwinian retribution.
In my day-job I make half-a-dozen briefings per day explaining NEVER TO DRIVE AWAY from an accident and always to STOP and THINK.
No briefings for the regular drivers though. Oh no. And what about a helpful crowd warning the drivers? No chance. They're there for blood, and they know they'll get it. Sad. Very sad.
Above is the view of Adenauer Forst on Friday. Remarkably similar to the classic video "Rhapsodie im Blech", I'm sure you'll agree. Below is what happens when you drive waaay too fast in something completely unsuitable for the task:
I umm'd and ahhh'd about showing this video when it first landed on my desk last night. As I didn't know the state of the driver and passenger, I didn't want to show what could very well be a human being's last moments. As it is, today I was told that both driver and passenger are 'out of the woods'. And I don't just mean they were taken out from the other side of that fence... they're going to make it out alive.
