Tonight's short update comes courtesy of frozenspeed.com. And it regards astroturf. Or artificial grass. Normally we can watch some American football players surreptitiously touch each others' groinal areas on it. But now we can use it at the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife too... (scroll down to the bottom for onboard video 'testing' the astroturf)

Astroturf is known for many things, but tyre traction is certainly not one of them. It's been laid to cover up the unsightly brown streak on the outside of the approach to Höhe Acht.

The grass here has been damaged a lot in the past decades. But now it's time for revenge. Anybody trying to widen their entry line could end up like this poor Porsche Cayman in RCN today.

The driver was relieved to see the intervention car and tow truck arrive at the scene, still he couldn't shake off this feeling that something was out of place ..."

In the name of journalistic discovery I decided to head straight out this morning and 'test' this new artificial grass with the RX-8. What a dumb idea. It's like putting two wheels into the Exxon Valdez's wake. The moment you leave the tarmac you're a passenger not a driver.
But let's not over-react, this section was hardly safe before. A wheel in the grass here is just as bad as you'd think it could be. The astroturf only makes a dangerous place a little worse... still, not the best direction to move, is it?
