918 record nurburgring

What is the fastest car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife?

It's one of the most asked questions, and the answer is really simple. Simple answer is that it's Stefan Bellof driving the Porsche 956 Group C car around the Nordschleife in just 6m11s. Wiki entry here.

Amazing as that laptime is, it's not really what people are asking. So let's try again...

What is the fastest ROAD-LEGAL PRODUCTION car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife?

Now we're asking a real question, with a lot of different answers! The truth is that there is no standardised table and no overseeing committee or body for who has the fastest lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Simply put, anybody with enough money or political pull can hire the track and "have a go". That means there's a lot of laptimes out there, and a lot of videos to match.

Therefore, BTG is taking an axe to the bushes of bullsh*t that have overgrown the legend of the Nürburgring Nordschleife and the eternal question: which production car has the fastest lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife?

The BTG Rules are simple:

Below are the times I know of, and I've seperated into three tables:

1). Fastest road legal productions cars to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife
2). Notable laptimes (still road legal production cars)
3). Awesome, but not valid by the rules above.

A claim is only judged as valid when we have unequivocal video proof and the car is undoubtedly a production-spec, road-legal car.

1). Fastest road legal productions cars to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife

  Car Laptime  Video  BTG says:
1. Porsche 918 Weissach Package 6m57s LINK The fastest road-legal car to ever lap the Nordschleife. Notice how the batteries run out of juice before the end of the lap. It certainly wouldn't make that time on the second lap. Also it costs quite a lot of money!
2. Nissan GTR NISMO 7m08s LINK Special edition car with special edition extras, no doubt. But you can walk into a Nissan dealer and put your money down. So it's in.
3. Dodge Viper ACR 7m12.1s LINK Special version of the SRT-10 includes real aerodynamic aids and lightweight components, not to mention semi-slicks and racing brakes. Factory built and showroom spec.

4.  Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition 7m14.6s LINK New record blows us away - set on stock RE070s Bridgestones by Akira Iido
5. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 7m19s  LINK Previously clocked at 7m26s, Pilot Sport Cups and lots of practice now put the ZR1 at the top.
6.  Chevrolet Corvette Z06 7m22.7s LINK
Updated 2012 model benefits from lots of small changes and one BIG change; Michelin Pilot Sport Cup semi-slicks
7.  Nissan GTR 7m24.2s LINK The car whose bold, BOLD claims put the 'Ring back on the radar in 2007. Now the 2012 model has knocked a few seconds off again... Nissan have often claimed even faster times from later models, but we've never seen a video.
8.  Maserati MC12 7m24.3 LINK

Conducted by the Black Falcon race team, this 'Battle Royale' was done in one day and the MC12 won. It wasn't the ideal day either, and Marc Besseng only spent a couple of laps in each car. Shocks were failing, the rain was getting closer. There would be more to come from all these machines if half as much time was spent as on the Viper or GTR....

9. Pagoni Zonda F 7m24.7 LINK
10. Ferrari Enzo 7m25.3 LINK

2). Notable entries that aren't near the top of the list...

Further down the list are more road-legal, production, cars that we feel deserve a mention. Cars that set the bar for their particular genre or class.

  Car Laptime  Video  BTG says:
Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 7m38s LINK A new breed of Pony cars emerged in the last decade. Cars that weren't just American drag-racers, but credible trackday cars. This is the quickest of them. The Boss 302 and Shelby GT500 also tested here, but that's a whole different story...
Porsche Panamera Turbo S 7m57s STORY Beating the Cadillac CTS-V by just two seconds, this is the fastest four-door saloon car to ever lap the Nürburgring.
SEAT Leon Cupra 280  7m58s LINK Click the link, watch the video. That's a 276hp FWD car going sub-8, full lap. Want one? You need to order a Leon Cupra, then add the "Ultimate Sub8 Performance Pack" for several thousand £/€ on top. Read more here on Pistonheads.
Renaultsport Mégane RS265 8m08s LINK It WAS the fastest road-legal front-wheel-driver ever to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. An incredible achievement that shows overall power alone is not enough to conquer the 'Ring. Honda have made noises about beating this and the SEAT above, we can't wait to see what happens next!
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8   8m49s LINK I suspect the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S once did an 8m33s full lap, but I can't for the life of me find it. So this Jeep wins, ahead of the old-model Range Rover Sport. New model Range Rover Sport might be along soon to take it though...

3). The cars that just don't count.

For whatever reason, these are the cars I don't think belong in the table above. Mostly it's their 'road-legal' status in question. Race cars, or race cars with number plates bolted on just don't count in this table. But they're still incredible laps (especially the Radical, which was driven from the UK to the 'Ring and back again!).

  Car Laptime  Video  BTG says:
1.  Pagoni Zonda-R 6m47.5s LINK No, it's seriously awesome, but it's not a road car. Crap, it's not even legal for GT racing!
2.  Radical SR8LM 6m48s LINK
The SR8 drive here might be road-legal in Britain and a LOT of other countries with special tests and one-offs, but it's not everywhere. Notably the USA and Germany. Hero Michael Vergers drove it on street-legal semi-slicks wearing jeans and a Polo shirt. He da man!
3.  Ferrari 599XX 6m58.1s LINK Not road-legal, not even available to buy! 'A rolling laboratory' is Ferrari's own description of this car! And it was on slicks. Cheating Italians... ;)
4. McLaren P1 "under-7" Story in Evo

A massive anti-climax to the three-way P1, 918 and LaFerrari battle leaves many people suspicious that McLaren's sub-7 claims are nothing but bluster. No video, no laptime released.

5.  Gumpert Apollo 7m11.5s LINK

Bonkers Audi-motored Apollo is a bespoke supercar only available as built-to-order. It's not strictly type-approved like the GT2.RS and other machines, but it is road-legal in Germany - which counts for a lot, but not enough. No global homologation (USA?) means no place in the list.

6.  Donkervoort D8 270 RS 7m14.9s LINK Donker-whut? Lotus 7-type car with big turbo power. Known in Germany and Holland, but nowhere else. Not exactly mass-produced either.
7.  Porsche 911 (997) GT2RS 7m18s No No video ever released, but otherwise sounds plausible! A showroom car that will be road-legal everywhere. Only the lack of video could deny this car its glory.
10. KTM X-Bow RR 7m25.7s  LINK  KTM's superlight entry to the trackday market... on FOUR wheels. This was just one lap with a professional, grabbed in the middle of a training day. Not bad! Only moved to the cheater's column because you can't put the RR on the public road without some jiggery-pokery. In the USA you can only buy it minus the gearbox and engine!

Don't agree with something here? Did I miss your favourite car or class of car? Please leave a comment at the very bottom of the page. The very nature of this page means it will never be finished, so keep checking back for revisions and additions! :)"

These are the cars that make the Nürburgring Nordschleife look easy. When you win the lottery, just come back here and buy one of each. I'll help you drive them too.

918 jump
Porsche 918. Enough said already!

Little KTM makes it into the list. Lightweight, good power and effective.

The King is Dead. All hail the new King. Previous generation Dodge Viper ACR was Production King of the Ring - twice and for two years.

The Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition - ruler of the ring for nearly two whole weeks

The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cups)

Radical SR8-LM is a bespoke hand-built race car that's only just road-legal. New SR3-SL is eligible for the top table, but I've not seen a proper attempt yet. Have you?

A massive 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Because there's even a record for SUVs!
(I suspect the Cayenne Turbo S could be faster, but I can't find a video...)
